feline art mountains - comfort is universal

At Scottie’s Fine Art Caves Inc. cats are our clients as well! The moment, iMac, our latest family member walked over the threshold, he began teaching Scottie and I everything we needed to know about him, particularly what his personal comfort preferences were! We were astonished at how quickly he laid claim to the comfortable interior of Scottie’s personal domain without so much as a, “may I”. It was immediately apparent that iMac had no qualms about being the newly designated cave-hog. However, the sight of a cat happily dozing all afternoon in my terrier’s cave while he slept outside the entrance waiting to get in was not something Scottie and I had planned on. Something had to be done, but what? Extricating a large, sleepy cat in the hope of returning my over-accomodating pooch to his rightful place was bound to bruise someone’s feelings. Seeing how comfortable iMac was, fully respecting that comfort is universal, gave us with no other alternative but to provide him with a home of his own. Scottie was right with me on that one.

I’m sure that iMac would have been quite happy to have his own cave, however, he is a cat, and cats have different needs than dogs. Cats generally prefer elevated places to doze. Keeping watch over their immediate environment from high above gives them the added advantage over predators or prey should either enter their territory unannounced. Height, therefore, was one characteristic we had to incorporate into his new abode, and since cats are climbers, what about something to climb up? And scratching, what about throwing something scratchable in? Separating his flavourful crunchies from Scottie by keeping them out of his reach was not such a bad idea either...

Six months later, after a number of design changes prompted by iMac himself, the mother of all domestic cat abodes was borne. Rising out of the studio floor stood a multipurpose, six foot, living-room ready monolith weighing in at just under 250 pounds, fully completed and ready for occupancy. Fashioned in the spirit of iMac’s wildcat ancestors, from the studios of Scottie’s Fine Art Caves Inc. we presented to the world the very first in a series of...
